I just acquired a Brown Lipe transmission and am wondering what I have. It has the names Watson, Brown Lipe and Spicer on the tag model 45 serial no. 05973. This transmission came from a 54 Cheve two ton with a two speed rear end.

That's an auxillary transmission that provides some additional ranges. I don't know what a model 45 is, but it could include both underdrive and overdrive gears. Great find!

Got a picture?
Any more numbers on the tag?
Is it a 3 speed?

I never saw one with all three names on the same unit.Brown Lipe was always overdrive and Watson/Spicer was always an underdrive unit. I have a three range Watson in my 53 wrecker with a two speed rear. It gives me a choice of 24 forward and 6 reverse.

Here is a picture of a 6231A that has GMC truck and coach, Spicer, and Brown lipe all on the same tag. I have yet to see one with Watson on it as well, but it's possible, as Spicer ended up with them all.
The preceding 3 pictures (if you click on the one at left) are the same transmission and the truck it is in, out in Montana on a trip I took a while ago.

About different brands being only OD or only underdrive. I don't believe that, as I have seen some of all the brands mentioned above that have been both ways. And I find that the majority of Spicer branded ones are made as OD units.
What I have not found is a Fuller that is overdrive. I have a few Fuller auxiliary transmission manuals, and all of them are direct and under. I have also searched for an OD fuller auxiliary, but have yet to find one, leads me to believe that they may not have made an OD auxiliary.

Thanks for the replies. The transmission came as a after market add on and is under direct and over. What I need to know is where to get new seals for the input and output shafts as both leak. Is there any secrets about taking the yokes or are they just like taking the yoke off the rear of a 420.
I'm currently running a three speed auxiliary transmission that came from a ten wheeler and weights about 300 lbs. and want something a little lighter. I'm planning on putting it in a 46 Chevy running a 1.5 ton rear with 10 hundred 20's hoping to get a little better road speed. I'll see about getting some pictures.
By the way my doodle bug wench truck has a four speed main five speed auxiliary with a two speed rear for a total of 40 forward and 10 speeds reverse.

Seals can most likely be had by finding the number on the old ones and going to NAPA or the like.

Yokes should come off like most others, remove the nut, then the yolk. You can probably put it in two gears at once to help with removing the nuts.

Some of the small parts, like shift rail seals, if your model has them, I have heard can be bought from http://www.cranecarrier.com/ I have not called them, or confirmed this, but several people I know say that this company has either lots of surplus Spicer auxiliary transmission parts, or has been making some new parts, prices may be frightening though. If they don't have parts, perhaps they know who does, let us know what you find.

If you find some more info on the model, and it's a Spicer, then I may have a parts book, and almost sure I have a service manual, again, if it's a Spicer..

Almost fogot...Try National/Federal/Mogul part # 410520 for the output shaft seal.

TTodd, it's possible that you don't have and input seal. Mine has the same names on the tag and might be from about the same time period. Instead of a front seal, the yoke has a grease grove cut in it to spin the gear grease back into the case. Mine leaks too, thicker gear grease would probably help. I haven't had the back yoke apart yet, so I'm not sure if it has a seal or not. Paul.
