I have an original 1934 1 1/2 ton blue flame six and purchased a 1935 passenger car blue flame six.

My question is......... What's the difference between these 2 engines and why does the 35 have a different valve cover configuration? Arent these 206's the same with interchangable parts? I have block numbers for both engines if someone can point me in the right direction.

RRG- I have a '35 AND A '36 1.5 ton truck and the original 207's look excactly like my brothers '36 pass. car. I'm wondering if some engine swap out has taken place....?

There is a lot of differences between the 34 & 35 engines to name a few; location of ign. coil is on cowl in 34 and on the tappet cover in 35, 34 has splash oiling to rods, 35 has squirt tubes and splash, 34 has smaller water pump and hoses (1.25"), 35 a bigger pump and hoses (1.5"). Block on 34 has a boss on driver side middle (same block as car that uses this for engine mounting), oil distributor is different, bigger on 35, inside cylinder compression ratio is lower on 34 than 35, Harmonic dampener is different, 34 does not front crankshaft oil seal only a slinger, 35 has a cork seal, Valves and head are different with 33-34 being almost the same, 35 and 36 are the same. 36 is almost a new engine with full cylinder block cooling, 34-35 is only top half of cylinder water cooled, 36 has a bigger water pump and rear pump baffle is cast in instead of a pressed in as 34-35 are, distributor and oil pump drive tang is reversed in 36. The 36 engine was a replacement engine for the 35.

I would suggest you get a Chevrolet parts book or if you like I can send you a complete spec. sheet for both or all three engines, The 35 & 36 engines share more parts then 34-35 engines. Casting numbers on 34 Master car and 34 Master truck 837231 (note the truck engine uses a Standard car intake manifold and has is not drilled for the LH side engine mount), 35 casting number is 837591 for all Standard, Master and truck engines. The casting number on the 36 engine is 886010. The 34 cylinder head will not work on a 35 or 36 block as the coolant holes are in different locations. Another way to tell if you have a car or truck eng. is to look at the stamped serial number behind the fuel pump Car starts with a number, 1/2 ton with a K, and 1.5 ton with a T.

Trucker you really know your stuff!! So the '36 may be a fair engine to mess with then as far as the evolution of stovebolt 6's goes. My brother is a 20 year veteran as a automotive machinist business owner and ownes 2 '36 coupes. He wants to dive into these 207's and see if he can massage and blueprint them. I own two '36 engines and a '35. I'd be interested in your spec sheets for sure. Was the 207ci ever called Blue Flame or was that in '53? Sorry to rob your post Rat Rod Girl but this info is awesome ......Rick

The 207 were never called blue flame. The 36 engine was the best of all the 207 cu.in. engines. Send me an e-mail with your postal address and I'll send you the information you want.

This doesnt look good...... cry cry cry

Looks like what I thought to be an original engine in my 1934 1.5 ton is looking to be something of a 1935 1/2 ton by what 35Trucker is saying. If 1934 passenger cars started with a #, and 1/2 ton trucks started with K, and 1.5 tons were T.........then my serial # that starts with a L leads me to believe this is a 35 1/2 ton truck motor..... cry....NOT A 34 1.5 ton.

I'll wait for 35Truckers engine specs before I go sob in the corner.

Even though "blue Flame" was not used on the 207 cu.in. engine as such; 1935 was the first year Chevrolet used the name to describe the new 1935 cylinder head combustion chamber design. I don't have the first use on the words to describe the whole engine but I think it wasn't until the 235 cu.in engine was introduced. I know they advertised the 1941 though the war years as the "Victory" engine.

The engine casting number has been read incorrectly; it is a 36 block casting # 886010 the 7 is just the mold #. B = Feb., 17 day and the year is 6 = 36. There is no casting number 836010 in the 207 block casting by Chevrolet US or Canada. Can you send me a picture of the driver side of the engine?

Rat Rod Girl what is the ID number stamped on the RH engine side of the firewall on the bigger of the two little zinc plates? If the 2nd or 3rd stamp starts with a "P" it's a 34 or if "Q" then it's a 35, "R" would be 36. The next letter to the right is the wheelbase and single or dual wheel indication. If I have all the stamped numbers I can tell you when and where it was built.

The zinc plate is a FAKE. I checked it and it comes up as a 1962 Chevy Impala. Is there any OTHER way to figure out if this truck is really a 34 or if it really is a 35 with the correct engine.

Now by my limited knowledge on these trucks I assumed it was a 34 by the tiny chevy emblem that is on the radiator "shell". I do not know for sure but I though 35 had the wing emblem on the "grill". All the information that I can get with differences in the body would be helpful. I can then look for these and make an edu'macated guess. Anything on the frame?

NOW, getting back to the engine that I bought in MI.......35Trucker, I believe you when you say casting number has been read incorrectly. I am going to check tomorrow and see what the casting # "3" looks like ON MY TRUCK ENGINE(837591-2)and compare it to the misread casting # "8" from the MI engine. WHY DIDNT I THINK OF THIS BEFORE ??? ohwell

The 1934 truck will have double bit ignition and door key vs single bit for 35. The 34 truck will have the ignition coil mounted on the RH firewall and 35 will be on the RH side of the center of the tappet cover. The 34 with have captured nuts (3 each side) for the wood side sills to cowl brackets, 35 will be just threaded into the metal cowl bracket. 34 cab windshield wing nut side guides will be straight, the 35 will be "L" shaped. Both 34 & 35 trucks use the 33 car radiator emblem mounted in the top band of the shell. The 34 truck (1.5 ton) will have 1 strap on gas tank on passenger side, 35 tank will have 2 straps. The 34 rear brake rod lever @ frt. of rear susp.spring eye is 5" long, 35 is over 7 ". 34 running board bracket have one bend horizontal to vertical, 35-36 will have two. 34 tie-rod ends have multi piece joint with screw drive slot in end and solid tie rod, 35 will be a modern looking ball joint & tubular tie rod. 34 rear brake shoes 2.5 " wide, 35 are 3" wide.

If the engine and trans are original 34 look at the casting numbers on the engine & trans (4 speed) at rear of top cover and the side of main housing of trans.& Pass. side of engine between distr. & fuel pump. They will be one letter for the month cast; A= Jan. B=Feb and so on, the next two numbers are the day and the last is the year which should be 4 (possibly 3 if the truck is a very early built truck and letter is K or L.

Another difference between the 34 & 35 trucks is the outer ends of the brake cross shaft in middle of truck; the 34 ends are bent on both ends into double "S" , the 35's are straight.

Rat Rod Girl, your has two "34 running board bracket have one bend horizontal to vertical, 35-36 will have two"
My 34 only have one bend.
Next we will be checking the brakes.
This is somekind of puzzle.

Mystery is solved. My 1 1/2 ton is a 1935. Everything that has been posted here has turned up to be true on my truck. Grizzle34......I think we need to do some picture swapping and confirm this.

Thanks for all the posts.

35 Trucker,

thank you for the info you sent me in the mail. Makes good reading material. You will be receiving mail from me in the next week or so in regards to your info.

One more question.........ok, theres more to come....lol.

Since my engine casting # is L 13 4 can i assume that my truck might have been one of the first to be built in 35? What was turn around time for casting a block, milling, assembling it and then putting it into a frame on the assembly line? Wish there was a way to determine my trucks birthday.

Same to two months is not usual for a block to go from cast to build, a lot depends on production build speed, time of year, difficulty of machining, etc. The truck ID plate from the RH side of the firewall will have the date the truck was assembled and the sequence in the plant the 35 truck start of production in each plant was 1001. The 35 truck production started in Dec. of 1934.

I took a look for the stamped serial number behind the fuel pump and came up with this #......T473I42I.

I understand the T is for a 1.5 ton truck.....what does the rest tell me?

It tells you the number of engine in all the 35 engines it was built. It is an early engine built in Dec. of 1934. Jan, 1935 started with 4775743.

Rat Rod Girl,

Here are a few serial numbers by year that might help ID your motor:

1934 - Master & Truck (No prefix letter), Standard ("M" prefix) s/n start at 3964078 thru 4708994.

1935 Master (No prefix letter), Standard ("M" prefix), Commercial ("K" prefix) and Truck ("T" prefix) s/n start at 4708995 thru 5500178. Starting in 1935 there was an "ecomomy" engine available and they had a "V" prefix added to the above codes (VM, VK, VT etc.).

Block Casting Numbers by year:

1934 (All except Standard) 837231
1934 Standard 473741

1935 All 837591

1936 All 836010

Hope this helps...

Mike B

The first 1935 Chevrolet 1-1/2 ton Trucks were built December 17, 1934 at Janesville, Norwood, Buffalo and Atlanta. St louis and Kansas City started on the 18th and Flint and Tarrytown started on the 19th. Oakland started 1-2-35 while Bloomfield started on the 3rd and Baltimore was last to start on March 11, 1935...they were a brand new factory in '35. All 1935 Truck production stopped between August 23--30, 1935.

All serial numbers in 1935 started with 1001. There is no way to ever know the exact date your truck was built, the best we can do is ID the month.

Mike B smile

Great information Mike B. Thanks everyone....keep the info coming. Going to MI to pick the 36 motor up this weekend. Should be a fun road trip. I'll be bringing more questions up on here once I start digging into it.
