I ordered a rebuilt from one of the parts suppliers and have been very happy with it. | | | | Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 1,867 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 1,867 | Lots of people seem pretty hip on the Carter YF as a replacement over the old rochester. Thats what Ive got on a 53 216. | | | | Joined: Nov 2002 Posts: 2,715 Carburetion specialist | Carburetion specialist Joined: Nov 2002 Posts: 2,715 | If it is a "numbers matching national show truck" Carter W-1 684s.
If it is an almost "numbers matching show truck" for local and regional shows, the Carter W-1 574s (1948) is almost as good, and a lot cheaper. And 99 out of 100 lookers won't be able to tell the difference.
A YF designed for a 216 is also an excellent choice, provided you live where you can buy real gasoline (no deathanol).
Jon. Good carburetion is fuelish hot airThe most expensive carburetor is the wrong one you attempt to modify. I noticed about 500 rpm more upper end capability with the 2 bbl in place of the old 1 bbl. | | | | Joined: Nov 2007 Posts: 16 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2007 Posts: 16 | It has a Carter YF 964s on it right now but it is broke. Should I just get a new one like that?

There's a website that sells those rebuilt. Langdon's Stovebolt, I believe it is. You'll also need the 2 to 1 barrel adapter, which is a high quality cast aluminum piece. Also get the linkage kit. I made my own K&N filter adapter out of fiberglass, but you can buy air filters for it there too.
It is a VERY cheap carburetor. About $60 bucks or so, if I remember right. I think you can get everything you need for about $100 bucks, give or take. And it runs soooooo much better. It actually improved the driveability of my Stovebolt quite a bit. Torque AND top end power were better.
The jets for that carb are hard to find. But what you can do, since they're just made out of brass, is to solder the hole closed, and then get the appropriate size drill bits to drill the holes in the jets out to various sizes, smaller first, until you get about the right jetting.
If you decide to do this, I have a few extra jets and the drill bits, and would be happy to give them to you to try out. I won't be needing mine anymore.
You can e-mail your address to me privately if you'd like...if you decide to get one of those carbs.
