Hello fellow bolters;

Fired up the the rebuilt '55 235 today and everything was fine until I noticed that the oil pressure only went to 20 psi, then down to 10 psi back to 20 psi and then settled in at 5 psi at idle, my book syas I should have 35 psi, increasing engine speed did not change the reading, still stayed at 5 psi. Everything in the Engine is new and Oil pressure gauge was checked and is functioning properly. My guess is the pressure relief valve might be stuck on the pump. Any ideas?

Thanks

I had a stuck pressure relief valve on my 54 and it made the pressure WAY too high until warmed up.

One thing to consider is to try a new, generic pressure guage to double-check.

Be aware some of the old motors required certain restrictions in their oil lines to maintain pressure. I had a similar problem with a 1953 302 GMC straight 6. After the rebuild it had various sized copper tubing and rubber hose here and there for oil line and the pressure seemed a little marginal. I had the tubing replace with factory spec size tubing and the oil pressure increased significantly. There have been a few threads on this in the past you could search for.

Izzenhood: There is an orifice that screws into the head of the gmc engines to restrict oil to the rocker arm. Was this left out?

Did you try to put a spin-on or full flow filter on instead of a bypass filter and leave out the restrictor oriface? If you left the oiling system stock plug off the filter holes with bolts and see if that fixes it, if so, add a restrictor on the outlet of the oil filter. It just drains back into the pan.
