I recently bought a '50 1/2 ton five window (short bed) that is all original, but in pieces. I would like to update the frame/suspension and have an opportunity to buy a '70 1/2 ton shortbed frame (front a-arm suspension, 12 bolt rear, disc brakes, etc). Does anyone know if this frame will work w/ my '50 body w/out major modification? I'm assuming body mounts will need to be moved/added, but is there anything else? Unless the 70 will produce a rear end, a tranny the clip and other goodies, I would put my $ on an after market Mustang II IFS. I'm not sure about the clip fit, someone else will be along I'm sure with that information. Good luck. BTW welcome to the Bolt, you'll get a lot of help here.

the short answer - anything fits with a torch and a welder.....so you will have to define "...w/out major modification?..."
The '50 has 58" track width, your '70 has 63" if memory serves me correctly so you would need to source custom offset wheels.
While I acknowledge the M2 IFS setups, I am making my own front X-member for mounting GM metric chassis IFS. (Malibu, El Camino, S-10, etc.) The GM metric chassis is 58" track (S-10 is 54" track, same spindles, upper and lower control arms, slightly different roll centers, and geometry).

I'd rather not do that if at all possible. Are there better frames out there that would be a better fit???? (S-10???). I can take many routes w/ this...but want to save myself from as many headaches as possible. I've been told that putting a V8 (I'm thinking a 300 hp 327) w/ an auto trans (I'm thinking a th350) into the old straight axle/ torque tube frame is not good. Thoughts? If I took this route I would definitely upgrade to disc brakes and throw a better gear ration in the rear. I only plan to drive the truck to shows and maybe an occassional trip to work on a sunny friday:-) All thoughts/opinions are appreciated! Thanks again! | | |
