Would anybody have any info of the back door check assemblys for a 58 Panel? Or at least know where I can get a set to make a pattern of so I can fabricate my own? Thanks.

the general configuration will be shown in the assembly manual section on the panel/burb body - pretty elaborate to fab - more detail, both faces - lotsa pieces, elaborate shapes - think you'd need to find some good used [all 55-59 same], tho what I've found are rarely in good shape

hope that helps, but no, I won't let'em outta sight! I have used chains on panels that didn't have check arms - chain welded to plate screwed on where arms would mount

Thanks for the info. I'm looking at sheet 114.00 in my assembly manual. If I could find someone who could give me the dimensions or even put the parts on a copy machine, I could take that info done to a fab shop I know and they could cut out the parts with a laser cutter.

well, that would be cool, you could make a bunch but a laser cutter doesn't make 3 dimensional shapes, that takes stamping and forming machinery

the problem I see is each arm is actually about 6 pieces, and some have pretty elaborate shapes, including a 'depth' that'd be impossible to measure short of taking'em apart, which is pinch welds

look at the 2nd pic I posted - notice the main section on the left - 6 dimples on the longer leg, 4 at the end of the shorter leg [welds], and double bends on both of the pieces, which are not exactly the same on the 2, + the fact that one piece is 'cupped' and the 2nd fits inside

I could prolly trace the main outlines and mic the thickness of some pieces, but I don't think you'd be able to duplicate the whole rig without CNC sorta machinery and computers to help - exactly the difference in repro parts 10 years ago being junk, and things like that now being good quality

It appears that they made these out of a couple pieces with the intent of reinforcing the arm that is bolted to the door frame. If it's standard 18 Gauge metal that chevy used, I could form the two peices by hand and then weld them together to form the tapered box that they originaly made. Between the plasma cutter, the MIG welder and a 17 year old son who wants to learn how to work metal, I'm pretty sure we could come close to original. Does Chevy have a source for parts dimensions?

As far as repo parts, I haven't been able to come even close to finding these. Thanks for your help.

58 Chevy Panel,
I have the same panel and the check-assemblies. They are in great shape. I will sell them to you if Roger (he has a 58 military panel) doesn't want them. I promised him first dibs cause he is going to help me cut up my rusted panel up in tiny pieces. I should know if he needs them in a day or so.

Mike - I wouldn't think you'd get anything from Chevy, unless you wanted to get into their 'authorized repro' program and pay the fees not tellin if they could even come up w/ the engineering specs now, and no there haven't been any repros made yet, and considering the probable lack of demand, I doubt there ever will be

I have run across the panels/burbs at wreckers, and have gotten rare bits like the license holder/light, so the stuff is out there - there's a place in Montana I think it was that currently has 3 TF panels, and I got parts from one they had here in BattleGround WA a few years ago

Roger was quick to respond when I said another stovebolter needed the check assemblies. He must have known how valuable they were. I was wondering when he was drooling over them! I will be happy to take pictures of the assemblies if that will help you.? Maybe I can give you rough measurements.

Any info you could provide would be a big help. Altho the Panel has a 327 in it, we are trying to make it close to original as possible on the outside.(Think sleeper) We are taking out the floorboard and firewall section this weekend and welding in another section without all the rust. I just want to get rid of the chains banging around the rear doors. Thanks.
