Anyone know what material fills the empty space in the dash where a radio speaker would mount on a 48-53 truck that did not come with a radio installed at the factory? There was a piece of cardboard in the hole but now it is just open space. I'd like to fill it but also do not want to put in something that didn't come from the factory in Nov 1951. Thanks.

What kind of screen? Is it metal, cloth or something else? Thanks.

It seems to be a real fine mesh metal screen.
Almost like the stuff for screen doors but thicker gauge wire.

Bill, my '50, 3604 is original and never had a radio. There is just a gray cardboard filler behind the grill. I just went out and crawled under to take another look.

Just took a couple of pics while my coffee was brewing Bill.
The material looks like it’s the same thing that the speakers are made from, I hope this picture will splain it to ya.

Thank you. That is what I removed three years ago... Now I've got to find a replacement. I think if I shot a piece of cardboard the dash color it would fit the bill. Thoughts?

How about a piece of roofing felt. It's already black and will last for years.

My 49 has the heavy metal screen that Marty described.

I wonder "if" Chevy made a change by 1951 to put in the cardboard vice the cost of the metal screen? Anyone know?

Well it happened again, thought I posted this put came back and it twernt here.
Master Parts Catalog 1929-1950; gp. 16.083... 1947-49 ALL... SCREEN (4 21/32x9 1/16)... pn. 3684234
My thoughts are this; If dealer installed, the screen probably came in the radio accessory package, if factory option then of course it was installed at that time. I is no doubt the equivalent of a speaker Grill-Cloth material. If the truck was not equipped with a radio then they probably simply used a cardboard filler for the grills back ground.

What do you think? It looks like what I pulled out three years ago... Thanks for the pictures of your truck.
