I've taken an automatic transmission (4 spd) from an 84 Chevy Caprice. I've read many posts about the different tranmisions, but haven't found any that tell me how to identify. Is it marked on the case?

Would think it's the 700r4. Try these two sites, very good for ID's on trannies.

smoran, it's most likely a 700 but not one of the best ones, prefered 700's were built from 89-93 but the 87-88 years wern't too bad.
if' it's still working, use it but just keep in mind they had a lot of problems..

where abouts are ya in the cornholer state?

To GL Perry, Neither of the web site adresses worked.

To Tomslik, I'm 28 miles north of Hastings in GI. Small world isn't it. Thanks for the info. The transmission was working fine in the Caprice, I'll hope my luck holds.

From what Ive heard, stay away from the pre 84 700's, My buddy has a 86 IROC Z, and beats the hell out of it and has never had tranny problems w/175,000 miles on it

Thanks GL,
The Camaro site had pan shapes that correspond to the transmission type. It looks like I've got a 700-R4. Thanks a bunch everyone
