I just got my engine back from the shop after having a complete rebuild done. Well not actually complete because I wanted to put the pistons in and put the head on. I have been meaning to ask you folks out here about the proper torque specs on the end caps and the torque specs and bolt pattern for my head. After reading Ftyler's post I realized that I should not take this topic lightly!

Can anyone provide the info that I need for a 55 1st 270? I would also like to know what manual would have this information in it. I have several but none speak about the engine itself, only about construction of the truck itself. Is it the Maintenance manual or the Shop manual or what that I need?

Shop manual. I wouldn't do the job without it.

bluebird, Do yourself a favor and get a Maintenance Manual. I will list a few specs from mine for you. These are for the 228, 248, and 270 engine.

According to the manual, these values are for threads that are clean and dry. If threads are clean and oiled, values can be reduced about 10 %. Values are in ft/lbs..

Connecting Rod Bolts - 40-45
Cylinder Head Bolts 90-100
Main Bearing Cap Bolts 90-100

Here is a picture of the head tightening sequence.... . Be sure to tighten those head bolts a little at a time. I started at 45 , then went to 75, and then to 95. Go slow..

thanks bluebird for the very kind words. But I've since extracted the bolts from the engine. A lesson I'll not soon forget.

If you're looking to add a little peace of mind in your enging build, get yourself a "Drill Out". I picked up one at the local Ace Hardware and I'm sold on it. A very expensive specialty item but one use more than pays for itself.

I only bought the single bit (as the 4-bit set was $43.00. But I might go back tomorrow and get the entire set.
