Today I put my 11" clutch flywheel in, and then I put starter in, then I noticed that the bendix gear dosent engage on to the flywheel ring gear very well. It seems like the starter needs to be shimed away from flyweel, if it could. then I looked at the old flyweel, it apeared that the starter was not running on it corectly either. I could tell by the teeth wear patern. I was hopping someone could tell me how many teeth are supose to be on my starter motor bendix, it's all 57 & 58 stuff. But maybey I got the wrong starter motor when I first got the truck on the road.It's in a 41 and all 12 volt.

I think the six volt starters matched up with a 139 tooth flywheel and the 12 volt starters with 168 tooth flywheel. Lots of people ran the 6 volt starters at 12 volts, or had them rebuilt for 12 volt. The two starters mount up the same, but they don't tango when matched with the wrong ring gear. The flywheels can be swapped back and forth just like the starters. Makes for some loud combinations. Start by counting teeth on the ring gear of your flywheel. Then count the teeth on your starter. I've got a 168 tooth on my 235, and a 139 in the attic. Lots of these old flywheels have bad ring gears, look for damage.

Thanks Realmcoy, that is much of the info I was looking for. Tommorow I will take starter to electrical shop a friend of mine owns, and see what he thinks about this. That is where I got the starter to begin with, maybey I got the wrong one to begin with, or maybey I have another problem. I'll know monday. thanks
