i have a 51 3100 that i have fitted with a 78 305 tubo 350 and nova rear end my problem is stalling when returnig to idle after burnig the tires i have checked for vacum leaks tried the timing at 4 and 6 and 8 degrees nothing seem to help at all the weird thing is that it will restart without touching the gas pedal the carb is a neww edelbrock 600 any ideals ??

You probably need to set your idling up or if you are running a performance cam, you need a stall converter. What it sounds like is you have too much load still on the transmission before the converter can start free-wheeling. Other than that, it sounds as if your carb is over-loading and flooding out and if that was the case, it would be hard to restart. Try setting your idle up a tad first.

You may want to add a dashpot to the carburator. It closes the throttle slowly on return to idle and allows the jets and manifold to clear of extra gas to prevent stalling. They are common on 4 and 6 cylinder automatic cars.

Give it 10* btdc and try increasing idle mixture. My LeMans does the same thing, because the idle circuits in the Qjet I'm using are emissions calibrated and won't provide enough fuel. Also check for fuel slosh in fuel bowl, choke adjustment, check manifold vacuum.
