What it sounds like is you have too much load still on the transmission before the converter can start free-wheeling. Other than that, it sounds as if your carb is over-loading and flooding out and if that was the case, it would be hard to restart. Try setting your idle up a tad first.

It closes the throttle slowly on return to idle and allows the jets and manifold to clear of extra gas to prevent stalling. They are common on 4 and 6 cylinder automatic cars.

My LeMans does the same thing, because the idle circuits in the Qjet I'm using are emissions calibrated and won't provide enough fuel. Also check for fuel slosh in fuel bowl, choke adjustment, check manifold vacuum.
