The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Engine Shop Engine type, Local sources can't tell me

I recently bought my first chev truck; a 49 3600. The engine has been replaced with a newer one. I contacted my local chevrolet dealer trying to find more info on the engine, but they were of no help. They said the number that I retrieved from the block was incorrect. The number came from an area just in front of the starter; it was engraved on a flat surface that looked as though it was there for that purpose. The number was 0060797F55Z. On the block as part of the casting was the number 3836233. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance!

Damm Chevy dealer, that engine is so easy to identify. You have a 235, made sometime in the 1955-57 range. There are probably numbers/letters on that block that given to some members of this forum, can tell you the month and year of its birth!

Brian, thanks for the help. As I get into this project further I'll look for more identifing numbers. Right now its only what I can see from up top. I haven't done any work on the car/truck since high school. I now have the 13 yr old son; the two of us are going to take this on as a project. It looks like a good way to stay close to him. We all remember how those teenage years are. Again, thanks for the help. I'll post a picture of the truck and ask for some feedback, are we crazy or not.

There are some additional casted numbers right next to the starter (almost hidden), maybe starting with an alpha followed by just a few numbers. Look carefully and report back.

Ashland ? Hey I remember during my high school days driving along the Smith River from Crescent City heading towards the Shakspearean Festival in my first AD - '52 3100 chevy with girlfriend by my side. sigh.....

I'll bet you remember that drive for more than one reason. Not only for the girl with you but also the drive. It's still a beautiful drive to this day. I drive Hwy 190 every year going to the coast for salmon fishing. Because of the rugged canyon the road hasn't changed much through the years.

It's hwy 199 not 190. Sounds like you have spent too much time with those Salmon Herbal fish finders (don't go there ok?, for I have...) Sometime you should spend the night at Patrick's Creek lodge in Gasquet, during the winter for some wild Steelhead fishing.

Anyway keep us informed with your block lettering. I found it was almost easier to remove the starter in order to find the numbers in question, but please don't go that far. A strong long bristle cleaning brush will help.

The series of #'s & letters that are cast into the block behind the starter tell the whole story. Look for " CONV............ ".
My guess is its a 55 235

My 235 has its birthdate "B262" casted right next to the starter. I believe:
B = Feb
26=26th of the month
2=1962
