Two questions.

1. My trans, I think, makes a ringing sound only in third and fourth gear and only when I accelerate kind of hard. Any one wanna guess what that is? Is it serious? It drives fine.

2. I'm trying to figure out what the trans is. Its a 4 speed (granny + 3)standard on the floor. tHe numbers on it are V7SO7. I think the V might be an N, I can't tell. I did some research and it looks like it might be a muncie.

One more thing. How many of you go to do one little thing to your truck and end up spending half a day on it? I find it very relaxing under the truck on my creeper just fooling around w/ things. Maybe its just my novice curiosity. :rolleyes:

Thanks for the reply. I'm pretty sure its coming from the trans. Its more of a rattling/ringing sound.

when you accelerate, is the ringing constant, or does it ring for a few second and then quiet down? Did you check to see if your tranny is tightly bolted to the bell-housing? Try rocking the transmission back and fourth. Or, the transmission may be worn out. have you made sure there is plenty of oil in the tranny?

I had simular problems with my muncie. The bolts had worked loose, and when I tightened them up, it seemed to quiet down. to check if its a muncie, the gear pattern is reverse is left and down, first is straight up, second straight down, third straight up, and fourth straight down. heres a diagram

GMC,

I went under and all the bolts were tight. The ringing is just for a couple of seconds then it fades. I'll look again and see If I might have missed something.
Someone else was saying it might be the u joints, but they seemrd to be in good shape to my unexperienced eyes and hands.
I guess it is a Muncie.

Identifying your tranny is easy. There were stock 4 speeds from this vintage, but I can't remember just which year the change was made, somewhere around 66. The SM420 has reverse to the left and down, the SM465 reverse is to the right and down. But I don't have a clue about what is wrong.

Does it have a 2 piece driveshaft. My '60 does that sometimes, and I know it is the carrier bearing, However I only drive it a few miles at a time. Check it out.

Does this thing have the park brake on back? The drum for it and another one inside to keep grease off the brake from U-joint can "ping" if something is loose hitting it. Like the return spring, Or, string/wire or anything hooked on joint and flying around hits it until it goes too fast to hit and stays straight out. Or metal or pc in driveshaft, rolling at slow speeds, staying out to outside when spinning harder. Clutch arm spring not tight? Arm rattles around.
