Hey guys, I got some cool 56 plates[cleared #s] for my 52 panel & had some questions only you guys could help me with. [I hope] 1st, how can I keep my old [63] plates that are on the truck now? The DMV says I have to "surrender" them. Also, are there metal 52 corner tags that I can use instead of the plastic ones to say its a 52? Someone told me the DMV had kind of a "kit" for older cars/trucks that we can use for this. A special frame & all. Thanks for any input. You guys really helped me w/my tires the other day, thanks again! Jeff

Hi Jeff,,,Sorry to tell you this but,,,,you have the wrong plates.
For a '52 panel youll need '51 series plates. Then you add the '52 tag in the corner.
The '56 plates are only good for vehicles from '56 thru '62.
The '51 series plates are used for vehicles '51 thru '55. BUMMER!!!

Hmmm, well I have "63" cal plates on it now & always just put the newest stickers on them. I just want the "56" plates for thier color, yellow w/black lettering ,instead of black plates w/yellow lettering. Will the DMV let me do this? Thanks again. Jeff

if they let you have the 63s, don't see why the 56's would be a problem - for the trading in the plates part, couldn't you wait and do it when the current reg expires? instead of renewing, take those off and apply for the new ones

Jeff, I don't think you'll be able us the yellow with black letter/number plates. Your vehicle must fall within the YOM '56-'62. But not to fear, you can give them to me grin .

Jeff you have a set of plates that falls under the exemption part of YOM (YEAR OF MANUFACTURE) You have a set of 63 plates that are still legally registered, once they have been turned in they will no longer be exempt and cannot be used again. What this will do is open up the numbers and letters for someone else that has YOM plates that they could not get registered ie: a set of 47 plates with the same number.

the only way is if the plates you want to use on the truck (dmv has no record of them) order personel plates with the same number if it is not in use, and when dmv gives you the new plates the numbers will match and run the old plates. the second way is when dmv issues your new plate paint it yellow with black letters and paint california on the top old style but it will not be embossed.

Jeff, I just finished registering my 51 suburban with 51 YOM plates. They are regular plates because suburbans were meant to carry passengers. (no tag needed because it's a 51)

Panel's where primarly used as work trucks.
So in your case,You might be looking for 51 YOM commercial plates with the added 52 tags

I know for a fact that they will not let you run the 56 or 63 plates on a 52.

As far as turning in your 63 plates, since they will be clear at that point, Tell DMV that you would like to pay the $20 or $25 dollar fee to maintain them clear. This way you could keep them and use on a 63 and above vehicle or sell them. (or maybe mail them to me grin )
Not sure on this, but it's worth a try.

I like the idea of ordering the plates with the same numbers, but keep in mind that now they will be personal plates and you will have to pay additional registration fee's every year.

With all this in mind, I found that if I educated myself a bit before entering the DMV it will work out fine. I was teaching them new things.

Hope I was of some help and not confused you.
Good luck!
