I have a 49 Panel with two different seats the drivers appears to be original but I also have a passenger seat but the two mount differently and they don't have the same style as to the back and sides. I was told they were different from the factory. Any body got any specifics on Panel seats?

hey craig, i still have my originale seats that came in my panel(not installed now) and the driver seat was similar to an old aircraft bucket seat with thick padding. the back of the seat folded forward. the complete seat would slide foward and aft by pulling on a lever located under the seat. my passenger seat didnot ajust but, you would fold the back foward and grab the the bottom seat and fold it foward and the unit then would rest against the dash.

Follow the link below to see pictures of the original type seats. The upholstery on these isn't right, but far as I know the hardware is all correct.

Okay guys I'm really confused now,
For deluxe54panel - I'll try and get a picture of what I have and get it posted. It may take a week or so. I don't know how to deal with pics yet.
For Tony'n I think I have a similar set up with the exception that my seats don't match. I have one style for the drivers side (slide adjustment type) and a different style for the passenger side (tilt forward type) The backs are different and the sides don't have the same connect points.
For OldSub, Thanks for the redirect to the pictures. My drivers side matches your photo's - now I wonder if I have the wrong set up or do you have two driver's side seats. I was under the assumption that the passenger side was the optional tilt forward type (bolt down front and bumpers on the rear). Anyhow I sure appreciate all the help. I'll try and get a photo so you guys can see what I have and maybe someone can identify them for me.

I guess I don't really know... But these seats came out of a '53 GMC panel and appear to have been original in that truck.

Remember that while a Suburban would need a fold-forward seat to allow passenger access to the rear, a panel would not because they never had rear passenger seating. Also the backs of these panel seats I have do tilt forward.

I own two Suburbans and two panels including the one those seats came from. Of the four trucks, the one those seats came from is the only one that had anything that could be original in it. The others were all not stock or had no seats at all, when I got them.

the pass side seat [always optional] was the same as the drivers one on the panel, and the same from at least 48-59 - I suspect that the seats that flip forward as Tony'N describes is the pass side of the burb seat - not uncommon to have a truck that a PO decided to install a pass seat and used whatever

Here is a scan of the panel truck passenger seat (RPO 263) from the 1949/50 Truck Data Book. The description indicates that it can be tilted forward to get to the storage compartment and to provide more load space.

The panel truck driver\'s seat seems to look like the passenger seat, but it does not flip forward and it is on a sliding/adjustable platform (the passenger seat does not sit on a sliding adjustable platform).

Both seats are seem to be what Tony describes.

Hello everyone, I'm learning a lot about seats! I have some pictures of the seats but don't know how to make them available to everyone. I don't have my own website to link a url or anything so I can only send them by individual e-mail I guess. Can someone let me know of a better/faster way. My seats are obviously different in appearance but the functions seems to be as Tony'n described. Passenger side folding forward. I checked my floor/seat shelf and the original mounting holes indicate that the passenger side is not bolted down in the rear. It is mounted with two bolts per side in the front two swing/pivot brackets. The drivers side uses four bolts one per corner. Everthing seems original on mine but the strange part is the seats don't look similiar. Please let me know about the photos.

Just a tid-bit guys... For those not able to find stock, I have seen lately 3 different subs, panels that are using a seat fron the 71-73 full size GM station Wagons. Chev Kingswood, Pont Bonny, etc. The seat comes from the second row on the passenger ( right) side and is made to fold and flip to allow entry to the 3rd row of seats. 1 sub used as is, and the others used the frames to use with the stock looking bench upholstery. Seems clever to me for what it's worth. Jon.

the drivers side, with the 2 ribs on the back, is the standard issue panel seat, used for both sides - the hingeing mechanism on the other looks similar to the burb pass seats I've seen, tho the backs on them fold forward - the metal back on it that wraps around the sides, looks like a sedan delivery seat - don't know if the pass side on them hinged

As Bill said, the driver's seat is the original seat but the passenger seat is not. The passenger seat should have the ribs on the back.

That foreign seat is not the 47-55 Suburban passenger "jump seat", which has a tubular frame.

Bill's suggestion that the seat might be from a Sean Delivery sounds good. Does anyone have a 1947-53 Restoration Pack? There may be a picture of the Sedan Delivery seat in there (the driver and passenger might be the same style in the Sedan Delivery).

The picture of a Sedan Delivery seat in the late '54 documents is a picture of the new '55 Sedan Delivery body style and they are different from the seat above.

By the way, if you look at the third picture above, it looks like the passenger seat base allows for the entire seat to rotate forward (but, the seat back does not flip forward). Those legs in the back must have punished the floor when the seat was rotated back to the floor.

ONE BIG THANK YOU to Brad for hosting the pics for me. I tried to upload them to one of the photo sites but never could get it to work.

With all you stovebolters help I now know that my drivers side is original and the passenger side is not.

I also suspected that it was from another model truck or sedan delivery as Bill suggests. Now if I can find out what it goes to maybe I can put it one e-bay or the swap forum and get me an original for the passenger side.

It doesn't show well in the photos but the rear post legs are steel with a rubber type coating on the sides and are about an inch in diameter and amazingly enough they have not put any wear marks or dents in the floor board/seat shelf. What I find unusual is that these were the installed seats and the mounting holes line up exactly. I can oly assume that the PO installed the non original seat and drilled the mounting holes to match. There are no extra holes so I also assume that the dealer had to locate and drill the mounting holes for the optional seat. Anyway, I can't thank you all enough. I will watch the discussion and hope someone can identify the mystery seat so I know what it actually belongs to.
