After a debate with myself I decided I had better take the gas tank out of my truck and empty the rust out of it. I had plugged up a cople of gas filters, so I fiugred this was probably the best thing to do.

I am a little disapointed in myself for actually running the truck in the condition the tank was in. Last night I pulled the tank out, and emptied what was left and nothing but brown chink rusty fluids came out of the tank. Very nasty stuff. I just hope the fuel filter did its job.

So Now I am soaking the tank with Castrol Super clean and water, and I have oreder a tank repai Kit from KBS only 66 bucks so not too bad. It was cheaper than some of the others, and looks to be a pretty good kit. I will let you guys know. KBS Coatings for Gas Tanks

I've had poor luck with tank coatings. After cleaning, I'd get your tank pressure-tested, and if it passes, put it in as is. Don't feel bad about running it as it was. I did the same, and broke down frequently until I added a sediment bowl to the fuel system just downstream from the tank. Now she works regularly and reliably.

I wondered about that, I will give it a shot and I guess if all fails new tanks are about 140 bucks or so. Its possible it could fail a pressure test but its pretty solid, or it seems to be but there sure was lots of crap in it. Also its important to note that this has been done once already but dear ole dad never recoated the inside, so its on its second go round of cleaning. It may be a little thin in some areas.

i just had a tracktor tank repaired he cut it open sandblasted it welded it up and then coated it i found tank linings fail if you leave the tank empty they wil peel but if kept full the lining stays soft and works if you line a tank and then dont put gas in it like i did a year later i looked in and it was all peeled off what a mess

you may wish to make one of these. based on the type pre-filter screen on my old motorcycles.

hmm, not a bad idea kind of a prefilter for the fuel filter. The only down side I see is accesability to this. Since my tank is behind the seat. I will try this out. I am still awainting deliver f my KBS coating kit, every ight I go home and beat the sides of the tak to get a little it more rust out of it. Hopefully the kbs coating will work well enough.

I've been running a rusty tank in The Ox for the past 6-7 years.... i use dual inline filters, and keep spares in the cab... I've pretty well got it down as to when the first filter needs to be replaced, and it hasn't left me "hanging" ever!!

I pulled the tank out of my Binder too... it was NASTY, we beat it up a bit, and rinsed out as much of the rust and crap that was inside.. I also run dual filters on this one.. I'll be buying a new tank eventually, after I get ready to restart the "rodstoration" process!

Yup, same story here. I'm also running 2 inline filters. The first one is a old style glass one with the screen filter, before the pump. and a clear paper filter one before the carb(Carb also has a stone filter so really 3). This set up appears to be working well but my tank on the 70' is a top feed design so it dosen't pick up everything like a bottom feed in the older trucks.
