If the screw won't tighten enough,I've loosened the screw, wrapped some foil tightly around the splined shaft (just one or two wraps)and re-installed the handle, and tightened the screw again. That'l usually keep it functional until another handle can be bought. By "no parking brake",do you mean it doesn't work,or is it missing? You mentioned the door handle falling off- look foe a little hole on the inside of the handle-- it should have a little set screw that is turned either by an allen wrench or, if the top is slotted, with a screw driver. If you push on the handle and tighten the screw it may solve your problem. The carb may be leaking because the float is sticking or misadjusted rather than needing a rebuild. Beautiful truck-- good luck with it. Use your service manual and don't be timid, there is not much you can screw up on these old girls/boys. | | | | Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 311 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 311 | Glad you found this place. That is a good lookin' truck.
Always get a 2nd opinion, especially if I am the source of the 1st opinion.

I'm in central California, there seems to be only a few Stovebolters here, but I do see a lot of AD trucks running around these parts. I'm in farm country and there are a lot of pickups used for daily transportation here. I just got my '54 GMC out of the paint shop and it's looking good too, I'll be using it for a daily driver now. | | | | Joined: Jul 2007 Posts: 50 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jul 2007 Posts: 50 | Thanks again for all the comments. I'm sure glad I found this place too! Speed - the parking brake cables etc aren't under the truck--though the handle and floor pedal dealie are in the cab. I was checking out the LMCtrucks website and it shows a metal rod and some cables that go to the brakes. I am wishing my manual would get here soon so I can figure out how to put the brakes in...as soon as I get the $$ to buy all this stuff Thanks for the tips on the window crank, i'm going to take a look at it first thing tonight! Chevman32 -- thanks, I wish I lived closer to you and I'd for sure take you up on it. I'm so impressed that these old trucks just won't quit running! | | | | Joined: Jul 2007 Posts: 50 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jul 2007 Posts: 50 | Figured I'd add some comic relief -- so since the parking brake cables (or whatever goes under there) are MIA, I have to put her in gear when parking. I live on a hill and the driveway had quite a slope to it. So in order to start it, I have to press the clutch w/ one foot, get a stick and hold the brake down, then stomp the starter and fool with the choke all at the same time. Its hilarious, I laugh every single time. I have to get that parking brake fixed And a rear wheel seal replaced...and the gauges...and some odd transmission leak...and put in a new radiator...and replace the head cover gasket...and rebuild the carb. LOL. Talk about getting a new hobby! | | | | Joined: Sep 2003 Posts: 2,384 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2003 Posts: 2,384 | If you're on a hill, just let her roll, pop the clutch & off you go | | | | Joined: Jul 2007 Posts: 50 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jul 2007 Posts: 50 | Well, duh. That would be one way to do it.
Thanks 64! | | |
