Oh wise ones,

I have been working on rebuilding the 235 from my 58, and I have noticed on some photos of other 58's that the oil cap is towards the front of the valve cover and some (like mine) the oil cap is in the center of the cover. What does this mean...if anything? Thanks!

It makes me wonder just how accurate mine is! Looks like you've got a true frame-up rebuild going on there. Good luck! Wish I could help. You might consider going into the gallery for '58s and '59s and seeing what other bolts look like. Shop manual couldn't hurt.

Not much- it depends on the year and what the engine is from. It depended on the body style- GM put the centered cap on engines that were easier to reach from the side and toward the front on engines that were easier to reach from the front.

My '58 235 (original truck motor) has it towards the front.

I think that 59-62 passenger car 235 engines had the oil filler centered in the valve cover.

It looks like that might not be the original engine. Oh well, I am not that concerned about being that precise in originality. I just want to learn, have fun, and cruise around on a Saturday afternoon. Thanks for the help!
