One of you guys has a website with pictures of your torque tube out on some saw horses. I think you were painting and installing the 3.55 gears and stuff. Now I can't find those pictues, anybody know who or where? Or anybody else got some torque tube pics?

What do you need? Rugo and I disassembled his tonight. Pulled axles, torque tube and third member are sitting under my new bench grin Banjo assembly is sitting on the floor with backing plates. Cover is sitting in the solvent tank. Getting ready to steam clean it, and put new seals in the axle housing. It is all open and pictures would be easy at this point.

Ok Ken, what I am wondering is, I am having someone ship me a torque tube with ofcourse the center section still attached. Inside is an all set up Patricks 3.55 conversion. Patrick says just drop the whole assembly in place of mine and leave the rear axle assembly in place.

My question is, when the torque tube and center section are removed from the axle assembly by way of taking off the circle of nuts, does any of the gears stick out past the flange of the center section? I was wondering if I could ask the shipper to just screw a piece of plywood over the opening to keep things inside clean and protected. A picture of this area would be great.

Tony,
I believe they do stick out a little. I'd suggest asking the shipper to build a quick plywood box around the gears in order to protect them.

Here's that link to the pic you were after. Scroll down to the 6th pic. You owe me a stack of flapjacks at Pleasanton for finding this pic.

Tony, the gears will stick out past the bolt flange of the differential center section by about 6 to 8 inches or so.this is after the center section is out of the rear end housing.

I'll post pictures tonight. Seems to me that all you want to ship is the torque tube attached to the third member (casting, pinion, ring gear, carrier assembly) that will then bolt to the front of your axle housing using said "ring of studs" Once installed in your axle housing (which is about 4 inches deep) your ring gear will still stick out the back side of the axle housing by about 2 inches. This is why the back cover (held on with the a ring of bolts - not studs) is dished outward - to clear the ring gear.

If you wanted to protect it, I would wrap the carrier in a oil soaked burlap bag and then put a couple of plastic garbage bags over that.

Tony,

sorry for the delay, I am scheduling challenged and the spare time required to snap a few pics has been shall we say . . . elusive? grin

Anyway, these should help.

I really appreciate it. It sure looks like a difficult piece to pack and protect for shipping. It also looks like it weighs a ton. Without proper protection if they drop it on that gear it will be a gonner. Man, this is a tough one. I think a crate is the only way. A difficult feat being on the receiving end.

Actually, it isn't that heavy - probably less than 150 lbs. I'd strap a 2x6 to it with metal straps. Then box the end with a 2x4 frame and a piece of plywood over the end to protect the gear. It would be tough to hurt this short of dropping it off the truck at highway speeds eek
