Greetins all. Just joined today. Tryin to restore a '66 C-10 to bone stock original, with a 292, without a lot to refer to. I could use some help on ID'ing factory correct valve cover, harmonic balancer and pulley(s), and air cleaner (not just what years will fit, but the exact original items). Also, PCV system connections, and whether or not my engine for that year is supposed to have the cooling system bypass. Anybody with photos of any of this stuff and the way it was out of the factory will be a lifesaver if you'll share. Thanks.

Welcome aboard!

First it's unlikely that you have an "original" 292. 292s were usually used in the bigger trucks C20 and above, unless special ordered. Look for a build sheet in the springs behind the seat, probably long gone. The reason for the previous comments are the "cooling system bypass" wasn't removed till the early 80s. Are your side covers 6" high?

Thanks Larry.

My seat had a build sheet under it, but the VIN didn't match so the seat must not be original. When I bought the truck it had a 230 or 250 (couldn't tell for sure since its casting number traced to both sizes). The reason I believe the truck had a 292 originally is because it still had the unique passenger side engine perch that only the 292 used. By the way, it was a real mess looking at how a previous owner forced a 230/250 onto a 292 motor mount setup. I was pulling washers, spacers, and even a 1" piece of iron pipe out of the mounts when I pulled it apart that they had used to shim and space and jimmy it. I have purchased a 292 from out of my area that is in transit at this time. So right now, I don't actually have a 292; I'm looking to put one in and make it as close to factory original as possible.

My 65 Suburban has an original 292. My digital camera isn't working real good now. I have to spend some time this weekend trying to figure why my new battery isn't holding a charge and while I'm under the hood I'll try to get some pics. The factory shop and factory assembly manual illustrates some things, but i don't have a working scanner now. also the chevrolet parts catalog is helpful with id numbers.

1966C-10, I've got some pics, unfortunately they are on my old laptop, which doesn't want to network, which also means no DSL. The pics are of a 64 which someone had put a 292. They did a better job than your PO. That 292 had an oil bath air cleaner. My 63 C20 which may have an original 292 has a paper air cleaner. There arn't many differences from a 250, the motor mounts, exhaust manifold - 3 bolts - different entry angle, and possible alternator bracket. You've already mentioned the bypass, which the early 292s had. I've got headers on mine now so Carryall Jerry maybe the best bet right now.

Hi 1966C-10, sorry but my camera doesn't work, shots in the sun come out mostly white and shots in the shade are too dark to see, sorry.

1966C-10, I found some I forgot I had. The 292 on engine stand as pulled complete. How do I get them to you.
