Alan sounds like we could ask are we having fun yet? You have certainly got a lot of very good help from these posts. After I read thru them, knowing you have a running engine that backfires, it reminded me of a game some of us did in a younger part of our life. We would turn the ingnition off for a few seconds and then back on as we were driving along. Guess what happened,
Yes in exploded the fuel buildup, destroyed the muffler, it swelled to the floor beating size. Is it possible that the Ignition switch/wireing, is turning of and on very fast? How to find out. Hot wire it, Take a piece of wire from the positive post of the batt. If it has one in the system put in a ballast resistor Attach it to the + side of the coil, takeing the other stuff off and see what happens. If it still backfires the problem is in the Dist. If not it is in the switch/wireing leading to the Dist. Just a thought, hope it helps.....Chb46

All this time I've neglected to give Paul's cardinal rule for automotive repair. If you're not sure what's wrong, always replace the cheapest parts and do the easiest work first!

baldeagle Never assume anything. grin I have seen guys lean on the fender and move the truck a few inches and turn the motor just alittle bit in gear. Just did not want him to think it would only go in 2 ways(as some motors do) grin SAs far as the ballast resistor is use the chryler ones and never had one fail. They will fail if you leave the key on.My bet is the point also. wink Well its finally snowing like a ..........well you know .Off to play in the snow all nite .John you got that Doge all warmed up??? :p

i'll put all my vitual money on bad coil, bad ground, or bad condensor. knowing about his Pueblo episode,, i would also guess his spark plug wires on the distrbtr are reversed but i don't think the engine would run at all. My truck was stumbling pretty bad once and my buddy says "well lookit that uglee color spark,,," and i said,,, "yeah".....
