I got a new gas tank for my '49 from Chevy Duty, but the filler tube that sticks out through the side of the cab doesn't seem to fit right. It's sitting too high in the hole in the cab and breaking the big rubber grommet. Just wondering if anybody else has the problem, or did I do something wrong?

Maybe it's not pushed into the connector hose far enough. Or the repop tank has a longer neck than a stock one. I suppose you could pull the filler out and cut some off the end to get it to go in further if it's pushed in all the way.

Actually, The filler neck is too short. Just barely sticks out from the cab enough to get the cap on it. I got the hose that goes between the filler neck and the tank from Chevy Duty, but I'm wondering if I might need a piece of hose that's longer.

Get the filler neck where its suppose to be..or where you want it and then measure the hose. It may "require" a trip to the local parts house where they ocassionally have that type connector even if you have to get one for a later year or make a trip to the junk yard to find a connector that will work.

I am confused as to what is too short. On my 49 3100 truck there is the filler tube on the tank, then a rubber hose, finally the metal tube with the gas cap. If it is the hose that is too short, I agree with Achipmunk. just get a longer filler hose.

Getting a longer filler hose is a lot easier said than done. I couldn't find one anywhere, which is why I got one from Chevy Duty. The hose appears to be about the same length as the old one, which made me wonder if I did something wrong when I put the new tank in.

Get some measurements and and someone will come along and compare yours to theirs. It will be tommorrow before I can take measurements.

Maybe your tank needs to slide a little closer to the filler neck.If you do need a new hose go to a hydrolic hose maker. Are you using the stock filler cap?

Tried moving the tank, but it will only go so far due to the outlet going through the floor. Went to 4 places today looking for some new hose. Nobody had any that was small diameter enough. Wish I was back home in Ft. Worth. Bet I could find some there in a matter of hours! I sure do appreciate all the suggestions. There's an answer there someplace.

By the way Beaver 53, I see you're in Azle. Do you know Bob Jackson? He used to do some rod work out of his garage. Last I knew he had a '39 (I think) Caddy street rod.

I don't know if this will help, but I measured 5" from the gas tank to the end of the "tank" tube. The rubber "connecter" hose measured 2 7/8". I did not measure the filler neck that the gas cap screws onto. I measured 3/8"(+/-) from the rubber boot to the bottom of the gas cap looking down. Looking up it was more like an inch (+/-).

Thanks 49. You wouldn't happen to know where a guy could lay his hands on about a foot of that hose, would you? Figure if I had that much, I could just cut it to fit.

Is this WITH the rubber "gasket/grommet" in the cab hole (see 3/8" measurement at top)? That might be about right.
Also, do you have your old tank to compare with your new tank?
Call the place where you bought the tank
About the longer filler hose:
1.)Talk to the OLD guy at ALL the local parts stores
2.)If all else fails you might try J.C. Whitney

Go to a store that sells tractors and farm implements. They should have a large assortment of hoses.
