Just replaced my valve cover with one of those fancy chrome covers and push rod covers, and it looks great! But, when cleaning up the old orange cover to sell, I noticed that somebody closed the open slots in the top of the cover with duct tape! What was the purpose of their doing that? Am I missing a fundamental mechanical lesson?

It is a 235 engine, cover simply bolts to the head, no top cap nuts.

I soldered mine shut and used a breather type cap for the oil fill so it would still breath.

Its a PCV thing...they closed them up and used a non-breather cap and piped the cover to the intake manifold. I had the same thing, now this very weekend I'm going back to the road draft tube...PCV..or postively corrupt vituperation ..Steve

1954/55-1st non-PCV valve covers had 4 slits in them for "breathing" (and they used non-breathing oil filler caps). Later 235s valve covers had no slits in them (and they used a vented oil filler-cap on non-PCV engines).

It was common for owners of slitted 54-55 valve covers to cover/seal the slits (and use a vented oil filler cap) because oil leaks out the slits and looks messy.
