I was told 8 and 18 thousandths on intake and exhaust respectively. cam manufacturer recommended something slightly tighter. was told that ehaust should have more to let valves remain on seats as long as possible as the seats are the only cooling that the exhaust valves get.

O.K. who knows what is correct?

My 1954 Truck Operators Manual says: Valve clearance (hot engine) - all engines (??)
intake 0.010"
exhaust 0.020"

My 1954 Chevrolet Truck Shop Manual says: Adjust valve clearances as follows (hot engine):
For 235 Thriftmaster 235 engine
intake: 0.006
exhaust: 0.016
For 1 1/2 & 2 ton trucks(not clear if this is for the 235 Loadmaster or 261 Jobmaster engine)
intake: 0.006
exhaust: 0.020

I use the settings in the shop manual.

The car settings might be different (and the 235 Blue Flame 115 might have different settings than the Blue Flame 125).

In my '50 owners manual, it says 0.006-0.008i 0.014-0.016e for 216 regular duty and .010i 0.020e heavy duty/>5000 gvwr and 235. That could be the source of confusication. It hurts the valve seats more to have them too tight than too loose.

No one has mentioned if this motor has a solid lifter&cam or a hydraulic lifter&cam!!

???So, which is it???

If it's a solid cam 6 and 16, 7 and18, pick one.hydraulics obviously will be zero, one turn (SLOWLY!)after the slack is taken out. By all means, put a brick on the gas pedal so the engine warms up- on a 235 about 5000 RPM for 20 minutes should do it, v-8's I figure about 7500 RPM and 30 minutes or until the last rod flies past your head (don't forget to count!, and main bearings don't count). Happy motoring!Follow these instructions and youll never have to worry about setting your valves agian.

well I don't know about the pieces flying, my dad and his brother had an old chevy with a 216 they tried to blow up in that very manner, and it ran out of gas. so they sold it to a friend who drove it for a couple of years. Also from what I have heard from some of the fellas that used to race these engines 5000 rpm wouldn't hurt them anyway. (obviously with a lot of preparation) We have a sense of humor and enjoy a joke as well as the next guy, but you need to contribute something useful as well, this site has a purpose...
