on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 145 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 145 | I installed "Chevs of the 40s" front sway bar on my '51, 3100. It took about 45 minutes and that included enlarging the holes for the "U" bolts.
I live about 200 miles from there and ordered the sway bar on Friday afternoon. Monday afternoon it was at my front door.
I should have done that years ago. The truck now handles like a Camaro (not really) but the handling is 1000% better.
I put the 3.55 gears in the rearend a few months ago but couldn't drive at 60-65 because it turned my knuckles white. After the install, I drove for about 35 miles on the Interstate and it was like driving a cloud.
$160 well spent.

I've been thinking about this mod for my '53 3100 and I think you just convinced me to go for it. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2005 Posts: 112 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jan 2005 Posts: 112 | I put one from a 80 model 3/4 ton on my 64. What a difference! I am trying to figure out a way to "engineer" a front sway bar onto the rear. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2005 Posts: 1,317 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2005 Posts: 1,317 | Just a suggestion on rear sway bars for AD trucks. I found that late 80's(70's may also fit) Camaro rear sway bars, along with all the attaching hardware and even the control links were a direct bolt-in swap onto my 54 open diff. truck. The stock Camaro bar is 3/4" diameter and the IROC-Z bar is 1". The distance between the link holes is 39". I mounted the 1" bar on top of the axle and only needed to drill a 3/8" hole on each side of the frame to bolt up the links.
I've used the 93-94 2WD Explorer front bar on several straight axles but chose the Classic Parts front bar for my Chevy truck. It requires less modification and is engineered specifically for the straight axle Chevy truck. The front and rear bars ELIMINATE body roll and IMHO are the least expensive and easiest upgrade to improve drivability. Normal salvage cost for u-pull bars is $40.00 for front and rear.
I have some pics of the rear bar install in my album. Hope this helps. | | |
