i was wondering if any of the guys from texas good tell me how to go about getting a title on a truck that just has a bill of sale. what to do first? how to make it easier? step by step would be great. thanks

I'm not from Texas but the universal first step is: Call you licensing agency (where you get/renew your tag) and ask what the process is. You'll get info straight from the horses mouth. You don't have to depend on someone else's possibly wrong memory.

Going throught this right now myself.

Do you know when the last time it was registered. if it was more than 20 years ago you get to have a lot of fun, like I'm having.

Under 20 years: it should still be in the system and they can reissue the title.

Over 20 years: You have to have a good bill of sale and 2 appraisal. Take this to TXDOT and they will issue a form that you have to take to a bonding agent, who will issue you a assurance bond that you then take back to TXDOT and they issue you a bonded title.

Go to the county tax office.

You need a policeman freind for step one. If it has tags on it have him run the tag. Get the owner name and address. If it has no tag. Have him run a check on the vin. to see if it is hot.
If its not then go to the County Tax office and ask for instruction.

I've done this before you dont want to go to the tax office and try to get a title on a stolen vehicle. They frown on that.

One question that has not been asked is do you have the vin#? I'm doing my '46 with no vin and I had to have the cops's ( a friend ) stop by with a form #VTR-68-A for assigned or reassigned number. Inspect the truck to insure there is no vin number, take that form and the truck to a central DMV, mines in Waco, they will assign a vin and place it on the truck and then you go through the registration process.

Have had a resto/rod shop in Texas for 30 years and two methods are the bonded title (listed in yellow pages) which runs from $100-$200 or the ten step procedure which costs very little but is time consuming. I don't have the list at home but some of the steps are: bills of sale for the frame, body, and engine; weight certificate from a certified scale; standard of safety affidavit; picture; a short note on why your doing it, and as David said a verification of the ID number by a police officer. The bad thing is it will be titled as a 2006 rebuilt, not what it actually is. I've found that taking the car on a trailer to the DMV along with all the paperwork is a good idea since the furtherest you will be run around is just to the parking lot and back, not 50 miles home and back. Be sure to have a notorised power of attorney to sign for any name that is on any paperwork. Once through the agony of initiation it's not so bad. Just remember all those DMV jokes have a basis.
