I posted a while back about first gear getting increasingly noisy, it was whining like crazy on startup.

It was missing almost a quart of oil...
I added 85w140 gear oil and now it feels tight and buttery smooth, almost too 'cushiony'?. Or is it that I need to get used to it?

Are there any adverse effects to using a 'thicker' oil in the trans? Increased pressure on the gears?

There shouldn't be a problem with using that lube, especially since it stays at the 85 thickness all the time. It just lubricates like a 140 whern it's hot. That's the same thing a 10W30 oil does. It doesn't physically thicken as it heats up, it just hangs on and lubricates like a thicker viscosity oil when the engine is up to normal temperature. Thw "W" in the designation means "Winter", indicating the flow rate is checked at 0 degrees Farinheit. Your 85W140 will flow like a SAE 85 oil all the time, and lubricate like a SAE 140 at high temperature. Best of both worlds!

I hope I didnt mess up the gears for lack of proper lubrication...
That green monster is a blast to drive and has been for 3 years as a daily driver (from late April to November). I love that truck... smile
