I've never owned one before but would like to get the timing on my '49 216 correct. I have quickly realized that I know nothing about the different types of timing lights - inductive, powered, etc. Would someone offer up some guidance as to what I should acquire to do the work on my truck?

It works on my 6V 38 too which surprised me. It isn't as bright but it does the job. Clamp the sensing lead to #1 plug wire & hook the other two to the battery cable & ground.

I have a couple of lights. I am not sure of the technical names for them, but both need to be attached to battery power, and both need to be attached directly to the plug wire.
I think the inductive style merely clips AROUND the wire...
The one light is called an advance light and it is the cats meow! You dial in the advance you want in degrees, on the back of the gun. This means you don't have to hunt and squint at BTDC lines etc.
On the old bolts, I think when you line the ball (triangle?) with the pointer, you are dead nuts on, as this takes into consideration all the advance needed.
The battery box isn't handy on these old rigs so you have to grab power from the starter.
If this is the only rig you will use this item on, I would search for a basic, inexpensive light.

I've got a basic Sun Timing light that I've had for at least 20 years, if not more..
