The gasket is close to round but has two bud like things on either side. So my question is does anyone know what model this rear end is or what kind of gasket does it use because I've right stumped the people at NAPA. I got mine either from Chevy Duty (American Classics now, I guess) or Jim Carter Classic Trucks, can't remember which now. I finally got around to replacing it a couple of moths ago. I just used a little bit of assembly grease and made sure that I had all of the garbage cleaned of the two surfaces of the differential housing before I put it in. holding tight so far.

If you can't have the gasket you need and no rtv around but you need to finish the reseal. Use string!!!  Yes kite string!!!!! just clean you surface install the cover loosely with all the bolts and wrap string around all the bolts between the 2 sealing surfaces 3 full wraps will do. Then tighten them down. Badabing sealed till you can get the right gasket or rtv.

You mention that the engine has been changed. It could be possible that the rear has been changed as well. Does it still have the closed drive shaft, or is it open? If it's an open drive, then the rear has been changed, and may be a later 12 bolt differential. If you can post a picture of the housing and/or the cover, we may be able to ID it for you. The flaps should be able to match it up in their gasket catalog, most of them have pictures of the gasket shape with the listings. Tiny, never heard the one about using kite string, sounds interesting. Have you used it yourself?

But on the actual third member it leaked (just my sealer ability I guess), no need to buy actual gasket sheet, use single-ply carbboard. The stuff ocereal boxes are made of and such. Worked well for me.
