The worm and the gears are in fair condition. The box is tight and hard to turn when put back togeather. With the adjusters loose it's still hard to turn. Could I have to many balls makeing it to tight. It was put back togeather with molly grease. I'm thinking that you may have put too much preload on the bearings. This is adjusted by the large plug on the bottom of the box, not the screw on the side. You may wnat to try re-adjusting the bearing preload before you tear it apart. i'm not certain about the '46, but the '55 1 1/2 ton has 53 balls per circuit, 106 total.
