on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Dec 2005 Posts: 101 Member | | Member Joined: Dec 2005 Posts: 101 | I sat my 55 on jack stands and noticed when I pushed on one tire it would turn at least 1/2" to 3/4" before the other tire would move. And when the other tire started moving it was hardly turning as much as the one I was turning.

It is kinda hard to explain, but if you popped your rear cover it would all become clear. The axles are designed to be able to turn at different speeds through the use of planetory gears. The reason for this is basically geometry, in going around a corner, the outside wheels have to travel farther then the inside wheels. (Think about the last time you saw a (non-posi) vehicle stuck in snow or mud, one wheel can be spinning 40mph and the other not turning at all.) They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing. 1972 Chevy c10 Cheyenne SuperIn the Gallery Forum | | | | | Joined: Dec 2005 Posts: 101 Member | | Member Joined: Dec 2005 Posts: 101 | When I put it in gear I have about the same abount of slack if not more.

If it,s not in the drive shaft pull the rear cover off the diff. One wheel should not turn more than an in. or 2 before the other wheel turns in the opposite direction. There should be no up or down motion inthe pinion flange & only about 1/8 to 1/4 in. turning free play. The carrier that the ring gear rides on should not have any side to side movement no more than .012 in free play. Examine the spider gears & shaft. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing. 1972 Chevy c10 Cheyenne SuperIn the Gallery Forum | | |
