I sat my 55 on jack stands and noticed when I pushed on one tire it would turn at least 1/2" to 3/4" before the other tire would move. And when the other tire started moving it was hardly turning as much as the one I was turning.

Although it seems strange, this is not a problem. It is what a differential is supposed to do. It is kinda hard to explain, but if you popped your rear cover it would all become clear. The axles are designed to be able to turn at different speeds through the use of planetory gears. The reason for this is basically geometry, in going around a corner, the outside wheels have to travel farther then the inside wheels. (Think about the last time you saw a (non-posi) vehicle stuck in snow or mud, one wheel can be spinning 40mph and the other not turning at all.)

Put the trans in gear & then try it.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

Sounds like you have a lot of slop somewhere. If it,s not in the drive shaft pull the rear cover off the diff. One wheel should not turn more than an in. or 2 before the other wheel turns in the opposite direction. There should be no up or down motion inthe pinion flange & only about 1/8 to 1/4 in. turning free play. The carrier that the ring gear rides on should not have any side to side movement no more than .012 in free play. Examine the spider gears & shaft.
