Is anyone running a 5/8" waterpump on a later 235? I just bought one and I've been advised that I would need to change the harmonic balancer and generator pulley to match. Is there a 3/8" pulley to fit this pump?

You can run a 5/8" pulley on a water pump on a 235 or 261. The older 235's had 5/8" pulley and I have run 5/8" pulley on a 261. I even ran a water pump with a double 5/8" pulley. It looked funky, but it worked.
Your question can best be answered depending on what vehicle you have the engine in. You can go either way and I would go the cheaper way, but you may not be able to go that way if your vehicle restricts you from going that way. wink
So - what vehicle are we talking about?

The water pump is for a 1960 235 car engine that was swapped into a 1953 Chevy 1 ton. I wanted a shorter waterpump so I was advised to get the adapter plate so I could use the earlier water pumps in the stock position. I bought a 5/8" pump in a moment of auction fever and now I still need:
a 5/8" generator pulley,harmonic balancer to match the smaller pulley,a fanblade(2 1/4 boltcircle,5/8" center hole) and Pre 68 Dave's adaptor!
That short shaft waterpump or electric fan or leaving the hacked radiator shell w/core forward are all looking pretty good to me now! So if anyone has any parts or shortcuts please let me know. Regards Peter

I shortened the late style pump with a press and used a junkyard pulley off an ordfay. It had the same diameter and belt size, but a lot less dish than the original. I think one of those would fit on the 216 style pump too.

wink wink
After reading your comments and the other contributors to this thread, it sounds to me like you need the adapter plate "Truckedup" used on his truck to assure you have that high water pump position for effective cooling. If you use it, the shaft should be the right length to allow proper clearence for your fan. All you need to complete the change out is a 5/8" harmonic pulley and a 5/8" generator pulley which you should be able to find at most any wrecking yard which has been in business since the 60's or 70's. The other thing you can do is advertise in the "Parts Wanted" area of the swap meet section of this site.
By going with this setup, your truck should look stock.
Good luck!
