I used a 2 part putty that came in a roll and you cut off how much you need and then mix it in your hand by squishing it. The center of the roll was one part and the outside was the other part. I dodn't remember the name of it. maybe sombody else will know. I used to patch my gas tank as gas was running out it worked great and is still holding.

First I'd be demanding some satisfaction from the seller. Second, if I decided to keep the tank I would coat the inside of the tank with Redkote sealer. It's tough, flexable, seals leaks and it's impervious to fuel and fuel additives.

I'm no expert on the subject.. but if I just bought a new gas tank and it was [censored]' gas when I filled it up, i'd be less than happy.

This isn't the first time i've heard about a new tank leaking.. and if i'm not mistaken, the last one I heard about was from Chevy Duty, too. You could probably search the fourms here and find the guy who was grousing about it.

I'd call 'em and tell them you want the tank replaced.. no way you should have to jack around with a new part to make it work.

wynn55, does the tank leak around a screw in pipe nipple?? If so just put some teflon pipe tape (avail at most hardware stores) and it should cure the problem. If it is a welded seam on the tank Chevy Duty would be replacing it pretty damm quick.

Chevy Duty replied today that they know they problems with the tank, and the problem is that it's made over seas, and that it requires a (metric pipe fitting )which may be impossible to find

Now theres real commitment to customer service there, pal.. sell people stuff that the parts required to hook it up 'may be impossible to find'.

Nice of them to share with you that 'known problem' before you forked over your hard earned cash for a stylish lawn orniment.

Guess they gotta pay for those fancy rides sitting in their showroom somehow, right?

I don't really understand what Chevy Dutys problem is with the fittings, these are made to spec by the overseas companies from drawing provided by the company ordering them, can't Chevy Duty just specify they want X size fitting with NPT on the order. If not why not?? You shouldn't have to re engineer a new part to get it to work on somthing that they say it fits.

If there's enough metal, you may be able to drill out to the next size NPT (national pipe tap) and use a standard fitting?

The repop tanks i've seen are pretty thin.. I don't know how you'd tap a piece of thin sheetmetal.

Depending on the tank design, and how skinny your (or the neighbor kids) arms are, you might be able to pull the sending unit out to give you a large access hole to the inside of the tank, then hog out the fuel supply hole to put in a standard adapter and put a washer and nut on the inside to hold it on/give it something solid to thread into.

I've not ever looked for one to know if such a thing exsists, but maybe you could find an adapter to go from metric to standard?

All in all it's alot of crap for an outfit to sell you a part for a 50 year old american truck that has METRIC threads on it.. I mean, at the very least, if the part isn't going to be a bolt in replacement, they should say so in the product description.

I would send it back and demand a refund and shipping costs.I would rather take a chance with a used original than a new one that has problems.Check other suppliers and see if they are having the same complaints. If you used a credit card, your credit card company will be glad to go after them,if they have a problem with refunding your money.

Sounds like you have screwed the old fitting in the new tank and it leaks, right?

That says to me that the difference in the pipe thread sizes and pitch is very small.

I would take the fitting out, get a new one as the threads may be damaged.

And then use a NPT tap to re cut the threads in the bung to match the new fitting of the original size.

And why Chevy Duty does not do this before they send the tanks out I don't know?

Good luck

I had the same problem with my new gas tank. I can't remember if I got it from Chey Duty or not. But it turned out the gas was leaking around the large washer that is spot-welded to the inside of the tank, not the threads on the nipple that screws into the washer. I took it to a radiator shop and had some solder put around the washer ( since it had gas fumes in it, he used a giant soldering iron instead of a torch). That stopped the leak. I know I should have sent it back, but I was too impatient.

For the price of a tank, I wouldn't be fixing the problem, I would be looking for a refund.

What emerges from a metric pipe fitting, a metric size pipe? What would you do with that one?

I'd send it back and ask around this web site as somebody has an original tank they'll send you.

Just a thought! I find it hard to believe that the soldered fitting is leaking but I do know that using white teflon tape on a fuel fitting can result in a leak. The correct tape color is either yellow or red for sealing fuel fittings. I think they sell this at Home D. or maybe your local NAPA store can hook you up with the right stuff. Cranking down on an improperly sealed steel plug .....well, you get the idea....

This is old new to you but your discussion sure saved me. My gas tank was so bad that I thought the best thing to do was order a new one from Chevy Duty. This was in July. Had the same headaches, could not find fittings. Called Chevy Duty and they said yeah we know, its made in China you will just have to tap it for a fitting.

Did that, put it in, put in a little gas and it leaked around the fitting. Thanks to your comments, I knew what to do and took it to the radiator shop and had the problem fixed.

Since Chevy Duty was aware of this problem at least in March, why are they selling it without warning people what they are facing. I have lost three weeks on this part of the project. This used to be the company that I did most of my ordering from. They should address this problem.

Same thing happend with the new sending unit for my 68 1/2 ton. The fitting on the new sender was 3/8 and the old fitting was 1/4 had to get an adapter to make the darn thing work. I know that they are aware of this problem but they don't tell you when you order that you need an adapter. If they changed the size then they should provide the proper adapter or at the very least let you know that you will need one.

If you can, get that statement of the known problem from chevy duty in writing, as well as their recommendation for the repair and upgrade to make the tank usable. If you do the repair, do it exactly the way it is stated and use an outside shop if possible. It would be good to have both of these statements and proof your modification was done to their recommendation in the event your bolt burns to the ground due to a fuel tank leak.
