For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 278 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 278 | I know that 1939/40 trucks have a hood ornament and assume that 1941/46 trucks have the plain nose piece. Are the nose pieces from the 1941/46 trucks functionally the same as the 1939/40 hood ornament? Can I use a cheaper nose piece from a 1941/46 to hold my 1939 hood on while searching for an elusive hood ornament? I'm certain that this would be an easy question for Barry. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 28 Junior Member | | Junior Member Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 28 | What do you consider "cheaper"? They're re-popped for $150. If you're planning on running a chromed ornament, the core+plating will cost you that or more. | | | | | Joined: May 2000 Posts: 424 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: May 2000 Posts: 424 | I've never compared the exact dimensions of the two from hole to hole etc., but I would think if you had to, you could do some cutting and welding to make the '41-'46 hood ornament (stamped from sheetmetal) replace the '39-'40 hood ornament (cast from pot metal). If I can dig up the 2 of those tonight, I'll look into it and get back to you on how they compare when laid side to side. The most important part would be that the hood pivot hole ends up in the exact right place. | | | | | Joined: May 2000 Posts: 424 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: May 2000 Posts: 424 | OK, now I have one of each sitting in front of me and can give some specific info. It looks like it would work with some cutting and welding. The '41-6 is a little narrower and that may be a problem in filling the gap in the 2 hood sides at the front. Not a big deal if you are using it as a temporary filler. The '41-6 extends down more (deeper) in the front towards the grille and would need to be shortened. The bolt holes don't line up and you would need to add some tabs with holes in them to be able to bolt the front of it down. The back of the '41-6 extends back towards the hood hinge farther and would need to be shortened. The pivot hole for the hood sits up too high and would have to be brought down by remounting the bolt tabs on that end also.
So I guess the short story is that the curvature looks right, but it will take a bunch of cutting, welding, and grinding to make it bolt on and fit. For sure not a direct bolt on. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 278 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 278 | Thanks Barry,
I was looking for an easy temp fix and from your description, this dosen't sound like a great idea. I would not want to cut up a good 41-6 part. I'm pretty handy with a torch. If I need to do that much cutting, might just as well try making a nose piece from scratch. Again, thanks for taking the time and checking. Your the man! | | |
