I need help identifying the tranny that I pulled out of my 52 chevy ½ ton pu (along with the engine, a '54 235) last weekend.

Transmission seems to have two sets of casting numbers… one on the engine end 3845122 D2456 and one on the drive shaft end D2955 3707195... no "torque tube"

The guy at the transmission shop that I took it to told me that he didn’t recognize it and that he was pretty sure that it wasn’t original to that truck. (I tend to believe him since #1 he's older than the truck, #2 he has a restored ’41 chevy truck he drives sitting in front of his shop, and #3 he showed me another tranny that he said came from chevy '52 pickup… and it didn't look anything like mine... it was “tall”, mine is “long”)... thanks!

Welcome to the Stovebolt.

Can you post some pictures of it? Both a '52 or '54 would have been torque tube trucks. It's unlikely this transmission was stock in either.

I presume it is a manual transmission, but you don't actually say that. How many speeds?

It's true. I really don't do anything but browse the Internet looking for trouble...

It's a mid-'50s Saginaw 3-speed, likely from a passenger car. Page 2-2 in this PDF catalog shows the case and tailshaft housing (extension) numbers given. From the casting dates (if that's what those other numbers are), it appears the case is '56 and the extension is '55.

Thanks for the info...

It's a 3 speed manual, "on the tree" shift

Curt,

That picture is it... thanks.

I'm starting to think that Johnny Cash was a previous owner... have to do some title research, could be sitting on history here.

So far, 1952 VIN, '54 engine, '55/'56 tranny, haven't gotten to the rear end yet... but it doesn't look like any of the rear ends I've seen in the catalogs, and the bed has been customized to boot!
