There is a one ton gmc in the wrecking yard with what I believe you would call a "brownine over and under" box. It is installed in place of the carrier bearing. Does anyone here know much about these boxes? I had heard they were pretty neat because of the overdrive and underdrive features for hauling.

Some Brown transmissions have over, direct, and under gears for a total of 3 speeds. If it has 2 shift rods, you've probably got a 3-speed unit there. Grab it, along with the shifter assembly out of the cab! The next trick is learning to shift it, since it's a non-synchronized "crash box" transmission! I learned to drive 18-wheelers on a 5X3 speed setup with two shifters. Jerry

You might also try searching for "Brown-Lipe Bob" on google. He knows a lot about the Brown-Lipe aux trannys and likes to talk about them.

Steve, the Dana/Spicer units being newer would mean that parts would be somewhat easier to find. As far as the older Brown-lipe units holding up under the higher speeds of today's trucks, I can't really say. I have not heard of any problems from people that I have talked with. One guy was making round trips from Oklahoma to Mexico hauling flowers and he had a lighter 30 series mounted in a **** Diesel and it held up okay. The only comment that I have heard from some people is that the gears whine at higher rpms. The older Brownies have a flat top on the case which the Spicer unit does not have. The flat top allows the unit to mount higher up next to the body. The Brown-lipe units had the capability of mounting a Power tower on it. The power tower was a top mount PTO that could deliver the full input torque. I don't have a lot of info on the Spicer units but will help if I can. Keep me posted. Robert.
