Could that be an engine number? You need the serial number from the door frame data plate.

Ken, If your Chevrolet COE, is a 1948 model, the ID Plate No., would have been something like this example: 14 RS-1 1321, The 14,= the Assembly Plant No., RS=1948 5700 series COE 158in. wheelbase. RP,= '48 5100 series COE 110in. wheelbase, & RR='48 COE 5400 134in. wheelbase. What does the ID Plate, in the driver door jamb, say.
