It looks like a real booger of a job to do. What do you think?

I have done the pins on AD hinges with success but those springs will try your patience.

I think the design is similar to the ones on my Corvette...not the most fun job, but I've done worse.

I had Metalman do mine and he does nice work. He has a standard price per hinge and you should get that beforehand. He has a little writeup on the GMC site.

Usually the pin seizes in the strap and ends up pivoting in the frame. This is opposite to the design. If yours are like that the technique is to cut the pin at top and bottom between the strap and the frame, and then use moderate heat to drive the pin from the strap.

The newly made hold open springs seem to be defective and they snap as soon as the hing is moved. However, Chevy Duty claims to have bought a new batch which they think will work.

Actually easy if you have a fairly good size drill press. If I recall correctly, the proper size bit to drill out the pin is an "R".

All this could have been avoided if the POs had just put in a drop of oil on the hinges every once in awhile.

Ray,

Thanks for sharing your procedure with us. Would it be inappropriate to ask what you charged for a rebuilt set of hinges when you were doing them. It doesn't sound like a 30 min job.

As a manufacturer of parts for trucks covered in this forum. I found it to be almost impossible to stay within the 'no selling' Rule.
In this one thread I see a link to a ebay item and perhaps a hinge rebuild and a cab corner sale.
In the past concerned board members would quickly point out I was in violation of the no selling rule.
Since I no nonger activly do hinges. I thought I would share how I did them so anyone wanting to do so could.
I could simply not answer the questions about the cost of the hinge rebuild and the cab corners, or if I did respond,I would be in violation of the no selling rule.
I've found a new fourm to participate in at oldgmctrucks.com I moderate the metal shop. I can post photos of the parts I make ,how to install them and how some are made there. If I mention I have a part available for sale it is no big deal.
I do check in at the SBP from time to time and do post ebay links once and a while in the parts for sale section.
If I can help with some thing like the doors hinges here I will. But I will not discuss any pricing, parts availability or any of the many new parts we are making.
If I can help you with a special sheet metal item please feel free to email me at wheelwrightrest@comcast.net
Thanks Ray
