Geez I feel like the biggest of dunces. I've owned my truck since 1997 and thought I knew it pretty well--NOT.

Just today for the first time I discovred my front shock absorbers. Duh! How can you miss somthing like that time after time while under the front end?

Anyway, they are the double acting type. After all of these years I figure that they need fluid added per service manual.

What kind of fluid should I use in them? I searched a few forums and couldn't find the answer. Brake fluid perhaps? Too lightweight?

With embarassment I slink silently from the room!

Yank 'em off and put real shocks on it, man!

It's a good question.. i'll keep an eye on this thread for an answer, because I don't know, either!

DON,T put brake fluid in them. Hydraulic jack fluid is what i,ve always used. Works real good. Like Fumblin says its best to replace them with modern ones. It all depends on what you are going to do with the truck & how original you want to keep it. Those shocks are nastalgic.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

Hydraulic jack fluid, that sounds reasonable, thanks.

This truck has been my daily driver so I will probably just put regular shocks on it. However I do have an upcoming trip this next week and won't have time to do it before I leave. I will have time to add fluid however. Will get some first thing tomorrow morning since I'm already headed to the store that would have it.

Thanks.
