Does anybody know what is the difference between the first generation full pressure 235 heads and the last generation used from 58 to '62. I have read higher compression. What happens if you switch any of the valve train, cams, valves, lifters etc. They all look damned near identical but are listed separately. If you swapped a 58 to 62 head onto an earlier 235 would you have to change the camshaft?

The good thing is that everything interchanges. If you swap the rockers, change them all so the lift stays even. Some of the blocks were set up for hydraulic lifters, but the head can't tell the difference.

Find an 848 head if you can, they are higher compression. The only difference in stock cams is the vette used the 261 cam. You can buy a M4F from Patricks, which is close to the same grind. We used to call this a 3/4 race cam.

Chevr Aulait,

Be sure to read the thread in the Engines Forum. Pre '68 Dave has this topic dialed in. It is under "? for the 235 guru's out there".

I've got a question as to the clearance for an upgrade to a higher compression piston for the 848 head. I was told to get a Corvette or Cadillac piston - slightly domed to get the compression up to maybe 9:1 from stock. But, I was told today the the head clearance won;t allow for anything but stock flat.

Jeff - I don't know about domed pistons. With stock flattops and a milled 848 head, I have .070 clearance.

So Fred,
Is that enough w/out having to recess the valves to squeek in a higher compression piston? If so, what piston would you recomend?
