The spring goes into the canister first, then the piece that pushes the filter cartridge up against the engine block. If the spring holds the cartridge down, oil will simply bypass the filter, and no filtration will be accomplished. Of course, the fliter lasts a long time that way!

Michael again. I have the cannister tyoe filter that is separate from the engine and has a hose in and a hose out. On these, where does teh spring go? I have always put it on top of the repaceable filter.

I was thinking of the filter on driver's side bottom of the V-8, that's in the steel can. The bypass-type filter that has oil lines running to it is held toward the bottom of the canister with the spring on top! I guess we were comparing apples and oranges!
