Those transmissions have an OD that is controlled by an electric solenoid - the OD assembly is added to a standard transmission. Anywhere from original to toggle switches.
But to answer your question on how to kick it into over drive you will be shifted into 3rd gear then let off the gas at around 29 mph then give it the gas. You will feel it kick in. Your rpms will drop.
This is on the 50s model 3 speed with OD.
