This could possibly belong in the painting forum - it's a grey area wink

I'm cleaning up the drums/hubs on my '50 6400. Working the rust off with a wire wheel, got it looking pretty clean. My thought was to give it a coat of Rust Encapsolator, but I'm wondering if it's bad to put paint on the sides, where the cooling grooves are? Like maybe it will make the brakes stay hotter if there's paint over those fins?

For that matter, what about inside the drum - Not the brake lining area, of course, and not the inside where the axle goes, but the inside part where the bolt heads are, etc. I know nobody will see the inside of the drums, but I thought it might be healthy to throw some rust preventor there.

Am I insane?

I painted everything that sees water, dust, mud, ice, snow and salt on my 41 with POR15 some years ago (including the drumms in- and outside).
Now after this time I have to say I would do it anytime again.

Never had a heat problem with the drums, even here in Bavaria where we have lot`s a mountain roads.

POR15 can stand the heat on the drumms where other paints give up.

It is important that you make sure the metal is absolutley free of any grease.

And I mean ABSOLUTLEY!

I have best results with break cleaner or metal prep. Even a fingerprint can make the POR 15 come of like duct tape.

Belive me I learned that the hard way.
