Hi guys, I would like some opinions from you experts out there. I am looking at a 57 GMC 1/2 ton. It has the 261 six and a 4 speed (granny low) transmission. The seller does not know what rear end it has but I suspect it is a 4:11. My concern is that I live in So. Calif. and must drive the freeways to go anywhere. What do you think of that engine, tranny, rear end set up? Am I going to be limited to 60 mph or so?

Appreciate your thoughts, Don

I feel you brother. Here in San Diego average traffic in the slow lane is around 75mph, and reaching well over 100 in the others. My rig is a 53 Chevy, 235, SM420, and (not sure) but at least low 4's in the pumpkin. I drive her everyday so I know the limits, but occasionaly the 4'11" soccer mom in the H2 gives me a pop quiz in my stopping distance. Sometimes I feel like I'm flying a B-17 over Berlin with a swarm of BMW powered Mesherschmidts trying to shoot me down.
I hope you get some good info that does'nt even mention a blown big block, and four link conversion with a 9" Ford. Keep it real old skool baby.

Change the rear end gears to 3.38 with a ring & pinion set or put in a t-5 trans. or both.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.
