I don't want vent windows. Do I have to replace the whole door to get rid of these. Can I just take the vent window assembly out?

Are you sure?
They keep the air flowing directly to your body.
If you have air-con then I guess it dosent matter.

Why would anyone not want the vent windows?

I love them, especially in the summer.

Hey Shooper,

How did you put new springs in? I have got my vent glass out on my 55.1 and will be installing new glass soon.

Also does that weather stripping around the vent glass pop in an out, mine is weathered and cracked.

Sorry didn't mean to hijack the thread.

Take off inside handles and panel..There's an access hole under the vent window..Look in there and you will see the stud with the spring and nut on it...Mine were flopping, and when I looked to adjust, there wasn't any springs at all..Hmmmm..Well, I ordered new springs from Chevy Duty, and they were too long, so had to a little modification..Got it done, and can now put the vents in any position I want, and they stay..Big difference..

chev235 - give us what year truck ya got - etc... there are aftermarket kits that you can buy to have a one piece eletric powered window.

I like my vent windows on my '65. Then, I don't have AC... he he he.. but even if I did I'd keep 'em, but that is me. Do what you want to your truck. Then sell the pieces ya take off on the swap meet. smile

Sorry I didn't provide much info on my truck. It is a AD 52 3100 reg cab. I live in AZ and I am planning on putting A/C in. I never used the vent windows with A/C I don't expect I ever will.

Is the vent window part of the door design can I take it out or do I have to replace the door?

There does not seem to be a kit available to change to a one piece window on the AD vent window doors. You can change the door to an earlier model but the door handle will be the level type not the pushbutton. There are differences inside the door as well. The front window channel would have to be relocated if you wanted to keep the original doors. Take a look in there and you will see there is not alot of room to work with. I plan to keep my vent windows at least for now.

I'd cautiously suggest thhe inner workings from a one piece glass door might be adapted to your doors;I'm not sure about clearance for the doorlatch and handle,or relocating the riser mechanism-that's some things you'd need to research. If you can find a 1 piece door to look at and measure, that'd be a good start.

If you are going the power window route, buy new window channels and put them in place. After you put the channels in, make a cardboard template for the new one piece window glass. Once you get the template reasonably close, transfer the cardboard template to a piece of masonite and cut it out. Once you have the masonite template, mount your powerwindow mechanism in the door and test the operation with the masonite template. It will probably require a little sanding and filing to get it to run up the tracks smooth. After that, bring the template (or templates..both doors might be a little different) to a glass cutter. That should do the trick.

I'd put the money where it's more useful, just cuz it seems like a lot of work to eliminate a factory feature just because you won't use it  I'll bet you never use arm signals if you've got the elec turn signals, but why amputate the arms? grin

Functionality aside, I personally prefer the look of doors WITHOUT the vent window.

Split winsheilds and no vent windows.. thats what I dig.

But so long as they don't leak air or water, i'd probably leave them and spend the $$ somewhere else.. maybe on air conditioning!

Crotch cooler? What's that? A hole punched (or rusted) in the floor pan? smile

With enough time, ingenuity and money most anything can be altered.
Easy answer - get earlier doors.
easier answer - leave 'em

I like the look without, also like sucking the air and bugs in. Tough decision. Glad it's yours. grin

I have a chopped/extended door(3") 48 that has a/c. I added vent windows to it. They like apple pie.

One of my past chevy trucks had vent windows but the one I currently live with today doesn't and though the vent window has value I'm really use to not having to stare at an additional pillar right next to me. I love the unubstructed view.

I like the AD's without the vent windows as well. The cab for my 51 already has the 48 doors on it and I may add the side cowl vent since that area is dented and needs relpacing anyway. I do like the curvy drop mirror that came on the vent window trucks.

I love my vent windows. The only reason they quit making them is to save money. If ya don't like vent windows buy a NEW TRUCK. YUCK! eek:

I too just replaced all of the rubber seals and trim on the windows on my 62, 3/4 . It's a pain in the butt but worth it. I had never done it before but just worked my way through. Made a few mistakes but went back and fixed them. No biggie. grin :
