Considering that this is the first cyl. head I've overhauled, I'm sticking closely to the manual on reassembly. My question has to do with "umbrella seals" on the intake valves. I didn't see them when I disassembled the head but the Haynes manual says the intake valves get them installed. The head gasket and seal set I bought doesn't have these, it only has the little rubber o-ring that goes on each valve stem, which I already know I need to install. Any insight is appreciated.
P.S.---my pontiac 215 is the same engine internally as a chevy 230-250-292.

| | | | | Joined: Jul 2002 Posts: 59 Member | | Member Joined: Jul 2002 Posts: 59 | The umbrella seals aren't factory, so it's not unusual to not find them. They're mostly used as a "stop-gap" measure before more serious head work is required. After the o-rings go, they mainly prevent oil from running back down the valve stem and puddling in the cylinder when the motor sits. That's when you get that puff of smoke on start up. A lot of people now also put the umbrella seals on in addition to the o-rings when doing a rebuild just because it's an easy time to do it and it provides extra measure of protection when the o-rings go south (which they will).
That said, I'm a little surprised that you are assembling the heads yourself. That's usually included when you have the heads machined. What did you have done to the heads? If you had new valve guides and seats, did you get new valves to match?

They should have recommended this for you, it's not that difficult and shouldn't take very long or cost much. Highly recommended, too. Stops oil from seeping down the valve stem and smoking on cold startup.

Some people mistakenly install the o-ring first and the retainer pushes it down the valve stem instead of having it inside the retainer where it is supposed to be. | | |
