The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area General Truck Talk color for engine and trans?

I have a '56 chevy 3600, with the 235 and the 4spd. I'm finding alot of different answers on what color the engine and trans were originally. Some say blue, some say grey..... Any ideas?

Also, this information from an old VCCA article on 1912-1966 Chevrolet engine colors is pretty helpful.

As for transmission color, my bet is that they came from the factory au naturel (unpainted); however, I have no good reason for having this opinion.

OK; 57 3100 235 owners, does this seem right to you? I thought the debate was between gray and blue, not green.

Something to add, please be honest. In a 47 AD with a 292, would I look like a complete fool if I did the engine the correct color for the year?

Jerry - note this list has been referenced many times here before - I think it was previously agreed the "** assumption" in the list was wrong on the green - I have a 57 235 [<50,000 orig mi when I got it] that was the same gray as both the other TF 235's I've had - no question in my mind that the car 235 was blue, truck gray - green may have been the color of the big truck 261 [which they say was yellow**]

gray it is!! and a nice semi gloss black on the trans to keep it from turning rust..... perfect! My next question is what color is correct for the frame/running gear? lol

"chassis black" on the frame - it's semi gloss, almost flat - available in spray bombs some places as frame and roll bar black - rest of the running gear didn't get painted, like the trans, driveshaft, rear axle, springs - shocks were black if I remember right

Krylon make a great shade. It's called Semi-Flat black. It has kind of a egg shell finish. Most of the auto parts stores have it.
