I have a 62 C-10 Stepside with a transplanted 327 from a car with no accesory holes on the heads. (the fronts are smooth) It has an old generator and a beat looking but still working voltage regulator. I want reliability. Should I go to the trouble of an alternator or just carry an extra set of brushes and regulator? Thanks.

Alternator brackets from a 72 & newer truck 350 should work. It all depends on what you want to do. The generator will run for years once properly rebuilt, and will work well as long as you don't sit idling at traffic lights for hours on end. Low rpm production is where the alternator has its advantage, but that can be changed with a smaller pulley on the generator.

Do the 72 and up 350 bracket mount to the front of the heads or the water pump? My heads have no provision for anything bolting to them. My generator is mounted to the exhaust manifold. It seems that it would get really hot there?!?

283/327 both can take an alternator directly in place of the generator on the rams head exhaust - no it doesn't get any hotter than it can stand, or as hot as the manifold, or any hotter than the oil filter that hangs on the 6cyl manifold!

might have to fudge the adjustment arm a bit, but worked easy on my 283 - not sure where my bracket came from, other than my parts pile but I think you'd be able to use the gen bracket w/ a little ingenuity and a spacer to adapt for the alt having a shorter mount flange, and if you can find any wrecking yard truck w/ rams horns, you might find a bracket there
